Description

SAMO Limoux Blanc is a still, barrel-aged Chardonnay from organically farmed high-altitude vines, made only in vintages that warrant it.

Limoux, in the foothills of the Pyrenees south of Carcassonne, is one of the few Languedoc appellations cool enough for serious still Chardonnay, and its white wines have long been raised in oak. This is Étienne Fort's still white under his Monsieur S label, drawn from thirty-year-old vines at around 350 metres on Limoux's rocky argilo-calcaire soils. The vineyards are organically tended, and the wine is aged in older demi-muids rather than new barrels, which keeps the oak in the background. Fort only makes the cuvée in seasons with the right conditions. The name is a nod to Jean-Michel Basquiat, who tagged political and poetic graffiti around New York in the late 1970s under the name SAMO. In style it sits closer to the whites of the Jura than to most southern French Chardonnay.

Drinking well now and for several years yet, it suits roast pork, chicken with cream sauce or Comté. Serve at 10-12°C.
