Santiago Ruiz Rías Baixas Albariño Rosa Ruiz 2022

Santiago Ruiz Rosa Ruiz is a single-parcel Albariño from old parral-trained vines at the estate's original seventeenth-century winery.

Alongside its larger holding at Tomiño, Santiago Ruiz keeps a small parcel of Albariño at San Miguel de Tabagón, ten kilometres west towards the Miño estuary and the Atlantic. The vines were replanted in the 1980s and are trained in the traditional parral canopy, the overhead pergola anchored on granite posts that Galician growers use to keep fruit clear of the damp ground. These gnarled, low-yielding vines give small volumes of concentrated fruit reserved entirely for this wine. The grapes are given an extended pre-fermentation maceration to draw the most from Albariño's thick skins, then the wine spends six months on lees after fermentation, which builds texture without dulling the variety's acidity. The label carries a hand-drawn sketch based on an old photograph of Santiago and his daughter Rosa on the balcony above the winery door.

Drink over the next four years with grilled fish, prawns or a Galician-style empanada. Serve at 10-12°C.
