Description
Santiago Ruiz Rias Baixas O Rosal is an Atlantic Spanish white built on the traditional five-variety field blend of its sub-region.
O Rosal is the most southerly sub-region of Rías Baixas, running along the Portuguese frontier in the basin of the river Miño and reaching inland from the Atlantic coast towards Tui. Vineyards are terraced above the river on alluvial soils, and Santiago Ruiz's holdings sit on the exposed sunny slopes of Tomiño, guyot-pruned and planted, in decreasing order, to Albariño, Loureiro, Caíño Blanco, Treixadura and Godello. A wine carrying the O Rosal designation must include Loureiro, and at around ten per cent of the blend its controlled yields bring citric drive and a floral lift. This release runs to 76 per cent Albariño, 11 per cent Loureiro and five per cent Treixadura, with Caíño Blanco and Godello making up the balance. Each variety was fermented separately and held six months on lees in stainless steel before blending and bottling, which gives the wine a supple mouthfeel behind its driving acidity and rocky grip.
Drink it young, within three or four years, with oysters, grilled sardines or a plate of pulpo a feira. Serve at 10–12°C.
