Description
Santiago Ruiz Rías Baixas O Rosal is a multi-variety Galician white from Tomiño, on the Portuguese border in the southernmost subzone of Rías Baixas.
O Rosal is the most southerly of the five Rías Baixas subzones, sitting on the top lip of the River Miño which marks the border with Portugal. It enjoys more sunlight hours and a drier climate than the other subzones, while cooling Atlantic breezes and the airflow off the river hold the ripening in check. Granitic soils and cool Atlantic nights supply the drive and energy. The domaine's core vineyards lie at Tomiño, and this release carries an unusually high proportion of Albariño for the house at 81 per cent, with the balance made up of Loureiro, Treixadura, Caíño Blanco and a dash of Godello. Winemaker Luisa Freire treats each variety separately and uses lees ageing to build texture and structure alongside the freshness, giving cool stone fruit over a firm Atlantic line, a nip of kernel spice and granitic grip at the close.
Drink it young, over the next two or three years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled sardines, salt-and-pepper squid or a seafood rice.
