Description
Santiago Ruiz Rias Baixas Rosa Ruiz is a single-parcel Albariño from old vines at the winery's original home in San Miguel de Tabagón.
Rías Baixas runs along the Atlantic coast of Galicia, and its O Rosal subzone follows the river Miño where it forms the border with Portugal. Santiago Ruiz is one of the founding names of the modern appellation. Most of its fruit now comes from Tomiño, but a second small parcel remains at the seventeenth-century winery at San Miguel de Tabagón, ten kilometres west towards the estuary. Replanted in the 1980s, these vines are trained in the traditional en parra canopy on granite posts, which lifts the fruit clear of damp ground in a region that sees a great deal of rain. The gnarled, slender trunks give low yields of concentrated fruit, used exclusively for Rosa Ruiz, which is entirely Albariño. Winemaking mirrors the estate's O Rosal blend: fermentation and six months on lees, all in stainless steel.
Drink over the next three years; serve at 10-11°C with oysters, grilled prawns or a simply cooked hake.
