Santiago Ruiz Rías Baixas Rosa Ruiz Albariño 2023

Rosa Ruiz is Santiago Ruiz's single-parcel Albariño, made from 40-year-old vines at the estate's original 17th century winery.

Rías Baixas runs down the Atlantic coast of Galicia, and this parcel lies at San Miguel de Tabagon, ten kilometres west of the domaine's main Tomiño vineyards, towards the Miño estuary. The old vines are trained in the traditional parral fashion, the overhead canopy anchored on granite posts that keeps the fruit clear of the damp ground in a region that sees a great deal of rain. Their gnarled, skinny trunks give low yields of concentrated fruit, and this parcel is kept aside for the estate's only 100% Albariño. A touch of skin contact and extended maturation on lees give the wine a stonier feel than the O Rosal bottling, and it is raised in small stainless-steel vessels chosen to build texture without adding oak. Granite is the common thread, showing as a chalky, tangy grip on the finish.

Drink over the next four years with oysters, grilled sardines or a seafood paella. Serve at 10-12°C.
