Serge Dagueneau Pouilly Fumé La Léontine 2019

Serge Dagueneau Pouilly Fumé La Léontine is a barrel-vinified Sauvignon Blanc from a single small parcel of Kimmeridgian marl.

Pouilly-Fumé sits on the right bank of the Loire opposite Sancerre, on Kimmeridgian marl, Portlandian limestone and flinty silex, and Sauvignon Blanc is the only grape permitted for its white wine. The Dagueneau family has farmed at Les Berthiers in Saint-Andelain for generations, and the vineyards are worked organically. La Léontine comes from a parcel of just 0.7 hectares on Kimmeridgian marl, the same fossil-rich clay-limestone that runs north through Chablis and the soil that gives Pouilly-Fumé its firmest, most saline expression. Rather than the tank used for the estate's Tradition bottling, this cuvée is fermented and matured in aged barrels which have long given up their oak flavour and act instead as a slow-breathing vessel. The result is a wine built for the cellar.

Broader and more savoury than a tank Pouilly-Fumé, it suits scallops, veal and richer fish dishes in cream or butter; serve at around 11 to 12 degrees.
