Sky Half’N Zinfandel Syrah 2017

Sky Half'N is a co-fermented Zinfandel and Syrah from Lore Olds' mountain estate above the Napa Valley.

It began as an accident. At the end of one harvest there were 135 litres each of the two varieties left over, and instead of bottling them apart, Lore Olds broke his own rule against blending and put them together. He liked the outcome enough to repeat it now and then, though never every year, and never more than a barrel or two. The 2017 crop was picked by the end of August, well before the Tubbs Fire reached the region. Both lots co-fermented for ten to fourteen days with a handful of whole berries and bunches, went through the estate's 1906 wooden press, and spent fourteen months in oak.

At 13.5 per cent this is the gentler Sky red: blueberry and fruitcake spice on the nose, then creamy mulberry, roast herbs and a zesty, powdery finish. Serve at 16 degrees. Grilled lamb, a smoky barbecued brisket, or aged cheddar.
