Smith & Hooper Merlot 2023

Smith & Hooper Merlot is an expressive Merlot from Wrattonbully on South Australia's Limestone Coast.

Merlot has long been a focus for Smith & Hooper, and the Hill-Smith family grows it in Wrattonbully, just north of Coonawarra. The region shares its neighbour's red soils and cool influences, conditions that help Merlot ripen fully while holding its perfume and fine tannins. French oak adds cedar and savoury notes to ripe plum, blackberry and blue fruit, with cinnamon and clove on the nose. Soft tannins and lovely acidity keep the wine fresh and give it structure, and there's a real depth of flavour through the palate.

Serve at around 16 degrees with roast pork, duck ragù or a cheese board. It's approachable now and will hold for a few years.
