Description
Sohm & Kracher Lion is the entry Grüner Veltliner in the partnership between sommelier Aldo Sohm and Burgenland winemaker Gerhard Kracher.
The Weinviertel is Austria's largest wine region, a broad expanse of loess and sandy loam north of Vienna where cool air off the Manhartsberg and the Czech border keeps Gruner Veltliner crisp and peppery. Lion is made entirely in stainless steel tank with no oak at all, so the fruit is picked to protect acidity, pressed gently and fermented cool before a short rest on fine lees and an early bottling under screwcap. Aldo Sohm, the Austrian-born wine director of Le Bernardin in New York, works with Gerhard Kracher of Illmitz on the range, and the brief for this cuvee is drinkability and varietal clarity rather than weight.
Light, dry and pointedly peppery, it makes a fine aperitif and partners salads, sushi, schnitzel and green vegetables; serve at around 9 degrees.
