Description
Sohm & Kracher St Georg is the pair's most serious Grüner Veltliner, a barrel-fermented single-site wine from Burgenland rather than the Weinviertel.
St Georg lies in Burgenland, in the warmer country around the Neusiedlersee where the Kracher family has worked from Illmitz for generations, and the extra warmth gives Gruner Veltliner a broader, riper frame than the same grape shows further north. This bottling is fermented and matured in barrel, split roughly half new oak and half seasoned wood, so the wine takes on spice, smoke and a creamy weight while lees ageing fills out the middle. It is a deliberately ambitious treatment of a grape more usually handled in tank, and the style owes as much to white Burgundy as to Austrian tradition. The wine is dry and built to reward cellaring.
Rich, oak-framed and dry, it calls for lobster, roast veal, creamy poultry dishes and hard cheese; serve at around 12 degrees.
