Spinifex Bete Noir 2023

Spinifex Bete Noir is an old-vine Shiraz drawn from six parcels across the Barossa and Eden valleys.

The name refers to the bane of one's existence, a joke about the number of small lots that have to be juggled to make it. Moppa, High Eden, Light Pass and the Eastern Foothills all contribute, and the soils change as you move between them, from thin skeletal sandy loams in the higher sites to the classic sand over red clay lower down. Vine age runs from 25 to 110 years, with about 45 as the working average. Pete Schell's reference point is the medium-bodied Barossa reds of the 1970s and 80s, bottles he first encountered in other people's cellars.

Aromatic and detailed, never heavy, with blackberry, red plum, pepper and a savoury, earthy undertow on fine tannin. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Roast lamb, a beef and red wine pie, or barbecued sausages with mustard.
