Description
Spinifex Chenin Blanc is the first bottling from a one-acre block of century-old Chenin in the Angaston foothills.
The Angaston foothills site behind it has been supplying Pete and Magali Schell with old bush-vine Grenache and Shiraz for well over a decade, and all that time they had an eye on the small Chenin planting in the corner. The first crop, in 2022, disappeared into the Lola blend; this year the fruit from that single acre of dry-grown, gnarled vines warranted its own bottling. Chenin off old ground like this brings natural breadth and intensity, so Pete picks early to keep the freshness in balance. Crushed without destemming, fermented in French oak, partial malolactic conversion, then demi-muids.
Intense on the nose, with stone fruit, grilled nuts and creamy lees, then a soft, giving palate with pin-point acidity and a long, mouthwatering close. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. Roast chicken, pork schnitzel, or a good Comte.
