Description
Spinifex Chenin Blanc is a Barossa Chenin from a single acre of dry-grown vines close to a century old.
The block sits at the highest point of an old vineyard in the Angaston foothills, and nobody knows precisely how old the vines are, though 90 to 100 years is the accepted range. Even in a kind season the whole acre will give you about a tonne of fruit. Because the site delivers so much natural breadth and flavour, Pete Schell picks early to keep the wine in balance. The grapes go into the press undestemmed, ferment in French oak, take partial malolactic conversion and spend ten months in demi-muids. Schell described the 2024 as fresh and glistening with fruit purity.
Fresh and finely tuned, with white peach, lemon, quince and a nutty, leesy depth underneath. Twelve degrees suits it, in a full-sized glass. Pair it with roast pork, grilled chicken, or a plate of prosciutto and melon.
