Description
Spinifex Chenin Blanc is the third release from a tiny, very old Chenin block in the Angaston foothills.
Old-vine Chenin barely exists in the Barossa, which is what makes this acre worth the trouble. It occupies the top of a vineyard the Schells have been drawing Grenache and Shiraz from for years, on vines widely reckoned to be 90 to 100 years old and dry-grown throughout. A tonne off the whole block is a good result. Picking happens early, because the site gives weight readily and freshness is the harder thing to hold. Whole uncrushed bunches are pressed to French oak, fermentation is followed by partial malolactic conversion, and the wine rests ten months in demi-muids.
Citrus and orchard fruit up front, then a waxy, leesy middle and a long saline finish with real drive. Serve at 12 degrees. Grilled fish, roast chicken with lemon, or a bowl of mussels in white wine.
