Spinifex Esprit 2023

Spinifex Esprit is a Barossa Grenache blend rounded out with Shiraz, Counoise and Cinsault.

Grenache sits at 82 per cent in the 2023, with 12 per cent Shiraz and three each of Counoise and Cinsault, that last pair contributing more lift than their proportions suggest. As ever, eight old vineyards supply the fruit, concentrated around Ebenezer, Williamstown and Bethany, dry-grown and with vine ages running from 75 years to more than 150. Indigenous yeast handled every parcel, macerations lasted from eight to twenty days, and the wine matured in a mix of stainless steel and well-seasoned 600- and 1,200-litre barrels. Perfume, finesse and savoury structure have been the brief since the label began in 2001.

Juicy and fragrant, with red cherry, pomegranate, dried thyme and a dusting of pepper over fine tannin. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Good with roast lamb, pork and fennel sausages, or a tomato and eggplant bake.
