Spinifex Grenache Gris 2023

Spinifex Grenache Gris is a skin-contact white from young vines on the estate's Dominion vineyard at Vine Vale.

Pete and Magali Schell bought Dominion in 2018: four hectares of low-fertility sand, gravel and red clay at 285 metres, giving small crops with unusual aromatic depth. Grenache and Shiraz from 1908 and 1918 already grew there, and in 2020 they planted just over an acre of Grenache Gris, reasonable enough in a neighbourhood where old Grenache has a long record, with Cirillo's 1850s vines and Yalumba's 1898 plantings nearby. The 2023 was the first crop big enough to bottle alone. A few hours on skins preceded pressing and fermentation in old puncheons, then eight months on lees in foudre.

A big whack of flavour: salty white peach, fleshy orange citrus, blossom and a touch of buttery richness, with plush, grippy texture and driving length. Serve at 12 degrees. It wants salt and fat, so try pork belly, fried chicken, or taleggio.
