Spinifex Indigene 2022

Spinifex Indigene is a Barossa red dominated by old-vine Mataro, with Shiraz for polish.

No two vintages are alike, and in 2022 Mataro took 90 per cent of the blend because Pete Schell could not resist how balanced and powerful it came in, adding Shiraz only to smooth the edges. The fruit came from two well-regarded Barossa Valley vineyards, Vinehaven and Rock Valley, the Mataro planted in 1926 and the Shiraz in 1996. Both are farmed simply: hand-pruned, hand-picked, largely dry-grown, minimal inputs. Each parcel was destemmed and fermented in small stainless tanks for a fortnight, then pressed into two vessels for twenty-two months, a seasoned 900-litre foudre and a new 500-litre puncheon.

Broody and complex, with juicy berry fruit, earthy depth, a rumble of minerality, woodsy spice and a black tea lift, on stony tannin and fresh acidity. Serve at 17 degrees. Braised beef, grilled lamb, or a rich mushroom and barley dish.
