Spinifex La Maline 2022

Spinifex La Maline is an Eden Valley and Barossa Shiraz made in the estate's most structured style.

The 2022 splits roughly evenly between two old vineyards: Rostein, the Schells' own site planted in the 1950s and sitting near 500 metres in the Eden Valley, and Materne at Moppa in the Barossa, planted in the 1920s. Both are organically dry farmed by hand. An extended, comparatively cool season delivered exactly the restraint this wine needs. Fruit fermented on indigenous yeast in small open stainless tanks over twelve to thirty-five days, with a bucket of Viognier added mid-ferment for lift, then twenty-two months on light lees in French barriques and 700-litre barrels, about 35 per cent new.

Aromatic and muscular but agile, with dark blue fruit, warm brown spice and earthy depth over svelte structure and a sweetly enveloping finish. Decant and serve at 17 degrees. Roast beef, lamb rump, or a mushroom and blue cheese tart.
