Spinifex Lucette 500ml 2023

Spinifex Lucette is a cane-cut sweet Semillon from old Kalimna vines, bottled in 500ml.

Cane cutting is the method: the canes are severed just before harvest so water stops reaching the bunches, and the berries shrivel on the vine, concentrating sugar while acid and flavour hold. Two very old Semillon sites at Kalimna supply the fruit. The canes were cut mid-March and picking followed in mid-April at 15.5 per cent potential alcohol, after which the fruit was chilled and pressed to French oak, 45 per cent of it new, for fermentation. Bottling happened just before the following harvest. This is only the second release in a decade, which tells you how rarely conditions allow it.

Delicately sweet, never unctuous, with spring citrus aromatics, golden fruit, a hint of spice and candied ginger on the close, all held up by bright acidity. Serve well chilled at 8 degrees, in small glasses. Try it with a fruit tart, blue cheese, or on its own.
