Spinifex Muscat à Petits Grains 2023

Spinifex Muscat a Petits Grains is a dry, aromatic white from a seventy-year-old Barossa Muscat vineyard.

Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains, known locally as Fronti, built the reputation of the Barossa's great fortified wines, and most of the region's plantings are old, dry-grown, and kept going by growers who would sooner preserve a bit of history than replant to something more commercial. Pete and Magali Schell work with an organically farmed block at Moppa, in the valley's north-west corner, which Pete describes as giving spectacular fruit. The grapes are crushed, macerated a couple of days, then pressed to old oak for fermentation, with partial malolactic conversion used to rein in the variety's natural exuberance.

Rose, orange and a little tropical fruit on the nose, then orange, honey and flowers on a palate cut with zippy acidity. It is dry and a lot of fun. Serve at 10 degrees with a Vietnamese salad, spicy noodles, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
