Spinifex Old Vine Grenache 2021

Spinifex Old Vine Grenache is a Barossa Grenache from a sixty-year-old block Pete Schell farm-shares.

The block came onto the market because it was judged too old and too low-yielding to be worth keeping, which is precisely why Schell rang the owner. Three years of farm-sharing later, the wine is doing the arguing: dry-grown, spur-pruned bush vines that give miserable quantities of strong, characterful fruit. It was hand-harvested and fermented wild in stainless steel with 40 per cent whole bunches and the rest uncrushed destemmed berries, pumped over every second day, then matured on light lees in seasoned thick-staved 500-litre French oak puncheons.

Dense with ripe fruit, dark spice, earth and a purple floral lift, then silky fruit on the palate with bright acidity, tight-grained tannin and an anise-tinged savoury close. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast duck, lamb skewers, or grilled eggplant.
