Spinifex Rostein Riesling 2018

Spinifex Rostein Riesling is a single-vineyard dry white from 1945-planted vines in Eden Valley's Flaxman Valley.

Two parcels of very old Riesling grow on this site, one from 1945 and one from 1956, and both crop at minuscule levels, around 0.8 tonnes per acre, which explains the concentration and power in the glass. Pete Schell had been making wine here since 2015, releasing it quietly as single-vineyard Eden Valley until he judged the 2018 good enough to carry the estate label. Fruit came mainly from the 1945 block, picked by hand in three passes across a week. Fermentation was natural, ageing ran 11 months on lees in 1000-litre neutral oak, partial malolactic was allowed, and bottling happened unfiltered at 16 months.

This is not a lean, tightly wound South Australian Riesling. There is real breadth: preserved lemon, beeswax, dried herb, a slatey finish. Serve at 10 degrees. It handles roast pork belly, tempura or a strong washed-rind cheese.
