Description
Spinifex Rostein Shiraz is a single-vineyard red from the Flaxman Valley in Eden Valley.
Shiraz makes up two-thirds of the plantings on this site, which was established in 1945 on lean granitic sand high in the Flaxman Valley. Pete Schell had worked with the fruit since 2015 and waited until 2018, when he felt he understood the ground and had the season to match. Picking ran over 10 days. The fruit was fully destemmed, wild-fermented in both oak and stainless steel, and left two weeks on skins before pressing. Eighteen months of ageing followed on light lees, in barriques and demi-muids, with half the oak new, the upper limit of the Spinifex regime, and the density of the fruit swallows it whole.
Dark cherry, anise, rose and something ferrous and bloody, with classy oak underneath. Powerful but fine-boned, and the tannins are silky. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with rare roast beef, grilled lamb cutlets or braised short rib.
