Description

Spinifex Ugni Blanc is a textural Barossa Valley white from vines planted in the early 1900s.

Old-vine Ugni Blanc is one of the Barossa's least exploited resources. Known as Trebbiano in Italy, it has grown here since the 1850s, which says enough about how well it suits the soils and the heat. For years it propped up the Lola blend, and since 2017 it has had its own label. The fruit comes from a tiny Ebenezer vineyard planted in the early 1900s, where around a hundred vines sit interplanted among the Cinsault and are picked ahead of it. Hand-picked, destemmed and crushed, the fruit had 12 hours on skins before pressing, then wild fermentation and nine months on lees in a seasoned French demi-muid, bottled unfiltered.

Lemon pith, dried pear, almond skin and a savoury, slightly waxy texture from the skin contact and lees. Dry and long. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees, with roast chicken, a bowl of clams or salt-baked snapper.
