Spinifex Vermentino 2025

Spinifex Vermentino is a dry white from a single acre in the far north of the Barossa Valley.

Hard, ironstone-rich soil at one of the higher points of Koonunga Hill gives this wine its shape. Vermentino is rugged and slow to ripen in this spot, which lets it hold onto acid while still building the generous texture Pete Schell is after. The block runs to about an acre, so quantities are small and always have been. Schell has been working the variety here long enough to know exactly what he wants from it, and the wine is made plainly, with no attempt to dress it up in oak or sweetness.

Waxy lemon and white blossom with a chalky finish; pure, dry and taut. Serve at 10 degrees. Pair it with grilled prawns, a Greek salad or a piece of fish with lemon and olive oil.
