Stanton & Killeen Grand Topaque 500ml NV

Stanton & Killeen Grand Topaque is a deeply concentrated Muscadelle fortified, blended to an average age of around twenty years.

The style belongs to this corner of Victoria and almost nowhere else: late-picked fruit left to raisin on the vine, fermentation stopped with grape spirit, then years in old casks in hot tin sheds where slow oxidation does the work. This family is one of only six producers making all four tiers of the classification, and Grand sits third, above Classic and below Rare.

Caramelised butter, malt, burnt toffee and dried fruit fill the mouth, cut by a marmalade-like acidity and a lick of mandarin at the end. A small glass is plenty: serve it at cool room temperature or lightly chilled with crème brûlée, sticky pudding, aged cheddar or a strong blue.
