Stanton & Killeen Tempranillo 2023

Stanton & Killeen Tempranillo is a Rutherglen red with ripe fruit, savoury edges and fine tannin.

Spain's Rioja and Ribera del Duero made this variety famous, and it turns out to handle north-east Victoria's hot days and cool nights nicely. The family's Iberian vines were originally meant for fortified wine; today some of that fruit goes into reds like this one, with oak kept in the background.

Savoury cherry fruit over a medium frame, so it goes with a lot. Pour at 15–17°C, slightly cooler than you would most reds, and bring out jamón, chorizo, paella or lamb slow-cooked with paprika.
