Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified in magnum gives a young, fruit-driven Rutherglen fortified the slowest path to maturity available.

A cool, delayed season let the Portuguese plantings — Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão — ripen gradually on the estate, and the finished wine was named a Fortified Wine of the Year finalist on 97 points. A larger bottle holds less air against the same liquid, so everything moves more gently; thirty years ahead of it is no stretch.

Deep ruby in the glass, with raspberry and cassis first, then liquorice and blackcurrant over firm tannin, plus violets, lavender and wood spice. Open it near 16 degrees for a crowd, with blue cheese, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate or a rich fruit cake.
