Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified 2015

Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified reaches its tenth birthday in fine shape, charming and still slowly unwinding.

Chris Killeen set the template for this label in 1997, leaning on Portuguese grapes planted across the family's blocks at Rutherglen. Fermentation is arrested with neutral grape spirit at around seven per cent alcohol so the natural sugars stay put, and after a short spell in oak to let the parts knit, it goes to bottle and ages much as a red table wine would.

Rose petal, raspberry and star anise open it up, and the palate runs red-fruited and spicy with fine soft tannins. Pour it at about 16 degrees with a slow-cooked casserole, hard cheese or a bowl of dark chocolate; another decade in the cellar will do no harm at all.
