Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified 2019

Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified is a Rutherglen take on vintage port, a sweet, structured fortified red from a single harvest.

Hot days and cool nights in north-east Victoria give very ripe fruit, mostly Portuguese varieties such as Touriga Nacional with Durif and Shiraz alongside. The grapes see a short ferment on skins before grape spirit is added, keeping them sweet. A brief time in older oak follows, and the rest of the ageing is left to the bottle.

Deep and firm now, it will soften and gain complexity over many years. Serve 60 ml glasses at 16–18°C with Stilton, aged cheddar or dark chocolate, and decant once it has some age.
