Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified 375ml 2005

Stanton & Killeen Vintage Fortified in the half-bottle is a twenty-one-year-old Rutherglen classic built mostly on Durif and Shiraz.

Durif takes 32 per cent of the make-up and Shiraz 30, with Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional filling the rest out of estate plantings in north-east Victoria. Chris Killeen was the winemaker. The small format suits a fortified of this weight, and two decades in bottle have pulled every part of it together.

Colour is still deep, with mulberry, black plum and aniseed lifting over chocolate and malt; the palate is mellow but powerfully rich, carrying cloves, plum, honey and chocolate through to sarsaparilla and black pepper. This bottle pours four small glasses — try it near 16 degrees with blue cheese or a rich pudding.
