Stoney Rise Pinot Noir 2018

Stoney Rise Pinot Noir is a Tasmanian red from the Holyman family's vineyard in the Tamar Valley.

The property sits on the west bank of the Tamar, north of Launceston, where Joe and Lou Holyman farm the vines and the Stoney Rise label runs alongside their more structured Holyman bottlings. The house approach leans towards drinkability: gentle extraction, seasoned oak and not much new wood, so the fruit does the talking. Northern Tasmania gives Pinot Noir a long, cool growing season, and the reds that come out of it tend to be bright and red-fruited, with fine tannin and real acid drive. This 2018 has had time in bottle and drinks accordingly.

Mature Tasmanian Pinot leans savoury: red cherry, forest floor, a little dried herb, with silky tannin and lively acid. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits duck breast, mushrooms on toast or a roast chicken.
