Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Candio 2018

Suertes del Marqués Candio is a single-vineyard red from El Barranco, home to the estate's oldest Listán Negro, and takes its name from the gully that crosses the site.

El Barranco lies on the northern slopes of Mount Teide in the Valle de la Orotava, and Jonatán García puts the oldest vines there at up to 150 years, which makes the neighbouring 80-year-old parcels look young. They are trained in el cordón trenzado, the plaited system particular to the Canary Islands. The other distinguishing feature is the soil: volcanic rock under a band of clay. The grapes are destemmed, though half the stems are returned to the juice, and after a long, warm fermentation the wine goes to French oak demi-muids and large foudre for eleven months before bottling without filtration. It is one of García's more serious reds, intense and spicy, with structure and energy rather than weight.

Give it a decant now, or ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef or a mature hard goat's cheese.
