Description
Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Candio is a single-vineyard red from the estate's oldest Listán Negro, some of it around 150 years old.
Candio takes its name from the gully that crosses the vineyard, and the fruit comes from El Barranco, home to Suertes' oldest Listán Negro, trained in the traditional cordón trenzado. Jonatan García estimates the oldest vines here at up to 150 years, which makes the parcels of 80-year-old vines look young. The soil is the second distinguishing feature, volcanic rock covered by a band of clay. In the cellar the grapes are destemmed but half the stems are returned to the juice, and after a long, warm fermentation the wine goes to French oak demi-muids and large foudre for eleven months before bottling unfiltered. It is one of García's more serious reds: intense and spicy, with a lifted perfume of dark inky fruit, mineral and earthy depth, and a vibrant, structured palate of dark cherry and plum closing on a sappy, persistent finish.
Drink now with a decant or hold for eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, braised pork or aged sheep's cheese.
