Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava El Esquilón 2019

Suertes del Marqués El Esquilón is a single-parcel red from just over a hectare of ungrafted, north-facing vines on rocky volcanic soil in Tenerife.

The parcel sits in the Valle de la Orotava on the northern flank of Mount Teide and was planted to ungrafted Listán Negro in the 1930s and 1950s, with a little hundred-year-old Listán Blanco still interplanted. Tintilla, the youngest material here, went in on its own roots in 2000; it has often been identified with the Jura's Trousseau, though winemaker Jonatán García now doubts that. The blend runs to about 90% Listán Negro. Unusually for this cellar the wine is made with whole bunches throughout, fermented in concrete and then aged fourteen months in 500-litre neutral demi-muids before bottling unfiltered.

Bright and open now, with eight years or so ahead of it. Serve slightly cool, at 15-16°C, with roast chicken, grilled tuna or charcuterie.
