Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava El Esquilón 2020

Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava El Esquilón is a single-parcel red from just over a hectare of ungrafted volcanic vineyard on the north side of Tenerife.

The Valle de la Orotava runs down the northern slopes of Tenerife on rocky volcanic soils that phylloxera never reached, so vines are grown on their own roots and some are very old. El Esquilón is north-facing and was planted to Listán Negro in the 1930s and 1950s, with a scattering of century-old Listán Blanco still interplanted; Tintilia, long thought to be the Jura's Trousseau though winemaker Jonatan García now doubts the identification, was added on its own rootstock in 2000. Listán Negro makes up around ninety per cent of the blend. Unusually for this estate García uses whole bunches for the entire ferment, which takes place in concrete, and the wine is then aged for fourteen months in 500-litre neutral demi-muids. It is bottled unfiltered.

Drink over the next eight years, lightly chilled to 15-16°C, with grilled lamb, roast quail or smoked paprika-spiced dishes.
