Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava La Solana 2020

Suertes del Marqués La Solana is a single-parcel red from 1.5 hectares of very old Listán Negro on the north coast of Tenerife.

The Valle de la Orotava runs down the northern flank of Mount Teide to the Atlantic, and its vineyards are worked in the cordón trenzado, the plaited training system unique to the Canary Islands. La Solana faces east between 350 and 450 metres above the sea, on a layer of clay over volcanic rock, and the vines range from 80 to 150 years old. Jonatán García's family estate treats each parcel separately: the fruit is vatted into small open concrete tanks for a cold soak, then ferments naturally in seasoned French oak puncheons, and the wine is bottled without filtration. Of the estate's single-vineyard reds this is the most textural and fruit-forward, though it belongs to the purer, more mineral style now coming out of the cellar.

Drinking well now with a short decant and good for eight to ten years. Serve slightly cool, at 15-16°C, with grilled lamb, smoked meats or slow-cooked octopus.
