Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava La Solana is a 1.5-hectare single vineyard of old Listán Negro looking east over the Atlantic.

La Solana is planted mainly to old-vine Listán Negro managed in the traditional cordón multiple and trenzado systems, the plaited training peculiar to Tenerife. The vineyard covers just 1.5 hectares, faces east and sits between 350 and 450 metres above the Atlantic. Its soils are a layer of clay over volcanic rock, and they give what is probably the most textural and fruit-forward of the estate's single-vineyard wines, with the mineral imprint of the 80 to 150-year-old vines and the volcanic ground always evident. The fruit is vatted into small, open concrete tanks for a cold soak before natural fermentation in seasoned French oak puncheons, and like everything here the wine is bottled without filtration. It sits squarely in the purer, more mineral style that now comes out of the Suertes cellar.

Good now with air and worth six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, grilled tuna or a mushroom and lentil stew.
