Description
Suertes del Marqués Trenzado takes its name from el cordón trenzado, the braided training system unique to the Canary Islands.
Under that system several branches of a single vine are plaited together into one long cordon, a response to the wind and the volcanic ground of the Valle de la Orotava on Tenerife's north coast. The wine is an old-vine blend of Listán Blanco from the high, north-facing vineyards of Esquilón and La Piñera, joined by a young-vine vidueño, or field blend, from La Florida, where Gual, Marmajuelo, Torrontés, Albillo Criollo, Vijariego Blanco and Verdelho grow together. All the fruit is hand-harvested. Fermentation takes place with a small portion left on skins, and the wine then spends nine months on lees in large oak ovals before bottling. The style is saline and fine-boned, with grilled-nut and smoky reductive character over a dense core.
A wine for the table rather than the aperitif hour, and good for five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, chicken with almonds or a semi-cured goat's cheese.
