Description
Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Trenzado takes its name from el cordón trenzado, the plaited trellis system found only in the Canary Islands.
The Valle de la Orotava climbs the northern flank of Tenerife on volcanic soils, and its growers train vines by braiding several branches of a single plant into a long plaited cordon that is laid along the ground and lifted on low forks. Suertes del Marqués works these ungrafted, phylloxera-free old vines across a run of small parcels. This village-level dry white blends old-vine Listán Blanco from the high, north-facing sites of Los Realejos and La Orotava with a young-vine vidueño, a field blend from La Florida planted to Gual, Marmajuelo, Torrontés, Albillo Criollo, Vijariego Blanco and Verdelho. Everything is hand-harvested, a small portion ferments on skins, and the wine is fermented and matured in large oak ovals on its lees for nine months before bottling, which gives it a textural, saline character built for the table.
Drink over the next five years with grilled fish, salt-baked potatoes and mojo, or roast pork; serve at 10-12°C.
