Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Vidonia 2021

Suertes del Marqués Vidonia is an old-vine Listán Blanco drawn from three basalt-rich plots high on the slopes of Mount Teide.

The Valle de la Orotava climbs the northern slopes of Pico del Teide on Tenerife, and its wines, then known as Vidonia or simply Canary, were celebrated across seventeenth-century Europe; Shakespeare has Falstaff drinking canary in The Merry Wives of Windsor. Suertes del Marqués, run by Jonatán García, has made old-vine Listán Blanco one of the most distinctive white wines in Spain. The first plot, El Barranco, was planted to Listán Blanco more than a century ago, the exact age unknown, and is still trained in the traditional trenzado system; the other two, La Solana and El Ciruelo, are small parcels of ungrafted vines nearby. Every vine behind this cuvée is over a hundred years old, on volcanic and basaltic soils. Winemaking is deliberately minimal: whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation in foudre, eleven months of ageing and no filtration.

Rewarding now and capable of eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a hard sheep's cheese.
