Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Vidonia 2022

Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Vidonia is a dry white from three basalt-rich plots of ungrafted, century-old Listán Blanco.

Vidonia is what this part of Tenerife was once called, and its wines were celebrated across seventeenth-century Europe; Canary was popular enough to earn a mention in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. In recent years Suertes' old-vine Listán Blanco cuvées have become some of Spain's most distinctive whites. The fruit comes from three basalt-rich vineyards on the high slopes of Pico del Teide in northern Tenerife's Valle de la Orotava. El Barranco was planted to Listán Blanco more than a century ago, nobody knows exactly when, and is still trained in the island's traditional trenzado or plaited system; the nearby La Solana and El Ciruelo plots hold ungrafted vines. All the vines for this cuvée are more than a hundred years old, on volcanic and basaltic soils. Winemaking is minimalist as always: whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation in foudre and demi-muid, eleven months' ageing and no filtration.

Drink over the next six to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, oysters or salt-baked potatoes with mojo verde.
