Suertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Vidonia V.P. 2021

Suertes del Marqués Vidonia V.P. is a two-barrel single-parcel white from hundred-year-old Listán Blanco in the estate's own Las Suertes vineyard.

The Valle de la Orotava climbs the northern slopes of Pico del Teide on Tenerife, and its wines, then known as Vidonia or simply Canary, were celebrated across seventeenth-century Europe; Shakespeare has Falstaff drinking canary in The Merry Wives of Windsor. Suertes del Marqués, run by Jonatán García, has made old-vine Listán Blanco one of the most distinctive white wines in Spain. V.P. stands for viñedos propios, estate vineyards, and the cuvée debuted in 2020. It differs from the regular Vidonia in two ways: the fruit is entirely estate-grown, from centenarian vines in Las Suertes, the same paraje behind the red El Ciruelo, on clay and sandy soils; and it is fermented and then aged for eleven months in new 500-litre Stockinger barrels, which give a more polished frame. Production is a fraction of the village wine, just two barrels. It is García's answer to a fine white Burgundy, with grip and drive rather than weight alone.

Worth cellaring five to ten years, or decant if opening young. Serve at 10-12°C with turbot, roast poultry or a cheese soufflé.
