Swinney Farvie Grenache 2022

Swinney Farvie Grenache is a top selection of bush-vine Grenache from the Wilson's Pool vineyard in Frankland River.

Walk the untrellised bush vines planted in 2004 on the estate's upper northeast-facing crest and the ground changes about halfway down the block: leaner and shallower topsoil, more gravel, more clay beneath. That is the Farvie patch, and winemaker Rob Mann says the fruit off it is different too, more ferrous and mineral, with velvety tannin. Pickers go over each vine several times, taking only the best bunches, then berry sorted and gravity-fed to French oak for a natural ferment including 28 per cent whole bunches. Mourvèdre used to be co-fermented in; now that it has its own bottling, that share has fallen to four per cent. Eleven days on skins, then large seasoned French oak.

Red fruits and iron filings, dried herbs, a little blood orange, and tannin with a velvet nap to it. Structured but not heavy. Serve at 16 degrees with roast lamb, a mushroom and barley braise, or hard cheese.
