Swinney Farvie Grenache 2024

Swinney Farvie Grenache is a hand-selected bush-vine Grenache from Wilson's Pool in Frankland River, at 13.9% alcohol.

Gravelly loam and dry-grown, untrellised bush vines define the Farvie patch, which sits partway down the 2004 block on the upper northeast-facing crest where the gravel deepens and the clay thins. Fruit thinning through the season and selective hand harvesting over several passes get the bunches to the right ripeness, and only those sitting in dappled light inside the canopy qualify. Picking for 2024 happened on 1 March. After hand sorting, Rob Mann worked with roughly 60 per cent whole bunches, a big step up on earlier releases, and gave the wine 10 days on skins before 11 months in large-format, fine-grained French oak.

Whole bunches push the aromatics towards florals and spice, over red cherry, pomegranate and a ferrous mineral base. The tannin is fine and the alcohol restrained. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast pork, duck and cherries, or lentils and grilled sausage.
