Description
Swinney Farvie Mourvèdre is the wildest of the three Farvie reds, made from dry-grown bush vines in Frankland River.
Rob Mann calls it the most audacious and emotive wine of the trio, and likens drinking it to a deep dive into a 600-page novel. The vines sit on the same kidney-shaped patch as the Farvie Grenache in the Wilson's Pool vineyard, northeast-facing on leaner topsoil with more coarse lateritic gravel, the roots now down into the clay. Bunch selection is severe. Stems suit this variety: Mann says they balance its wildness and rusty edge while lifting the spice. With bunches and berries small again in 2023, he settled on 66 per cent whole bunch, gave the wine 11 days on skins, then 10 months in large seasoned French oak.
Intoxicating stuff: dried violets, blood, black olive, bramble and iron, with spice from the stems and long fine tannin. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Pair it with a slow-cooked shoulder of goat, merguez, or mushrooms and lentils.
