Description
Swinney Farvie Syrah is a Frankland River Syrah raised entirely in seasoned oak.
No new oak goes into this wine, which Rob Mann treats as a discipline: complexity then has to come from viticulture, whole bunches and time on lees. The 2022 was hand-harvested from selected parcels in the Wilson's Pool and Powderbark blocks, planted to clone 470, Waldron and Jack Mann's heritage mass selection. In a warmer season, the estate's shade cloth earned its keep, softening the light and cooling the bunch zone. Sorted berry by berry, the ferment ran with 65 per cent whole bunches, moved by gravity into one French oak vat plus two demi-muids. Twelve days on skins, basket pressing, then 14 months in large, fine-grained seasoned oak.
Savoury and ironstone-driven, with black pepper, dark plum, olive and a graphite finish. The tannin is firm and mineral. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Match it with a charred rib eye, lamb kofta, or slow-cooked beef with olives.
