Swinney Farvie Syrah 2024

Swinney Farvie Syrah is a dry-grown, trellised Syrah from two selected Frankland River sites, at 13.8% alcohol.

Powderbark B2 and the Wilson Pool 801 garden project supply the fruit, and only a sub-section of the soil within each is earmarked for this wine, with the vines farmed to make dry growing viable. Shade cloth covers the side of the canopy that takes the afternoon sun; shoot positioning and bunch selection, both rigorous, do the rest. Rob Mann used 67 per cent whole bunches and aged the wine 11 months in large-format, fine-grained barrels, with no new oak, which he sees as the harder and more interesting path. He is chasing perfume, florals and personality, not density.

Perfume first: violets, peppercorn, red and blue fruit, then an ironstone, ferrous core that runs the length of the palate. Serve at 16 degrees. Good with grilled lamb, roast beetroot and labneh, or a plate of charcuterie.
