Description
Swinney Mourvèdre is a single-variety red from dry-grown bush vines on the Wilsons Pool vineyard.
Stem inclusion crept up in 2023 to a well-judged 30 per cent, drawn on for what Rob Mann describes as the variety's ferrous quality, fine structure and wild spice. The vines were planted in the early 2000s on rich, gravelly loam and are dry-grown. Picking waited until flavour and tannin were both ripe, after which the fruit was sorted berry by berry and moved by gravity into a single stainless steel fermenter. Eleven days on skins, then 11 months in fine-grained large-format French oak. This was the third consecutive year the variety was bottled on its own, and by now it is the wine that states the site's case most plainly.
Violet and lavender lift over blue and blackberry fruit, with salumi, pepper and gravel underneath. Plush but bright, the tannin powdery and wide. Serve at 16 degrees, with roast lamb, a beef and anchovy braise or grilled portobello.
